Between Houston and Austin, Lake Somerville State Park consists of two sections. The Birch Creek area has 19 miles and the Nails Creek area has 13 miles. The 13 mile Main Trail connects both districts horse camps by following the western shores of Lake Sommerville and Flag Pond.

To reach the trailhead from Houston, follow US290 toward Austin. At Burton, turn left heading northwest on SR2780 for 10 miles. Turn right heading northeast on SR180 for 1 mile to the Nails Creek trailhead parking area.

Overall, Lake Somerville State Park is the 10th most popular horse trail of all 22 horseback rides in Texas. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Lake Somerville State Park including Sam Houston National Forest, Big Sandy Creek Horse Trail, Lake Houston State Park and Brazos Bend State Park.
