North of Houston and just northeast of Conroe, the Sam Houston National Forest has 67 miles of multi-use trails. There are 2 one-way loops marked by red arrows. Since these horse trails are normally closed after rainfall to protect them, please make sure to call before riding if concerned.
To reach the horseback riding trailhead from Houston, head north on US45 for 60 miles to Exit #102. Turn left onto FS1375 and follow to the trailhead.
Overall, Sam Houston National Forest is the 4th most popular horse trail of all 22 horseback rides in Texas. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Sam Houston National Forest including Big Sandy Creek Horse Trail, Lake Somerville State Park, Lake Houston State Park and Brazos Bend State Park.
