East of Durango and north of Bayfield, the Pine River Trail is a very scenic ride into the Weiuminichi Wilderness along the Los Pinos River. The horse trail has many side trails for a varied experience. There is a nice horsemans lodge located about 10 miles north of Bayfield on the right.

The Pine River Trail horseback riding trailhead is located about 20 miles north of Bayfield and northeast of Vallecito Reservoir.

To reach the trailhead from Bayfield, head north on CR501 through Columbus to the Vallecito Reservoir. At the southwestern end of Vallecito Reservoir, turn right onto CR501A to the NFS Pine River Campground. This route is good for small trailers only. If you have a large trailer, you may want to take the road along the west side of Vallecito.

The trail heads northeast out of the campground along the river.

To reach the Pine River Campground from Durango, head east on CR 240 (aka Florida Road) for roughly 16 miles to the town of Columbus. Turn left heading north on CR501 for roughly 5 miles to Vallecito Reservoir Dam. Turn right heading southeast on CR501A across the dam. Continue for 5 miles along the eastern shore. Turn right heading east on CR501 for 4 miles to the campground.

Overall, Pine River Trail / Los Pinos River is the 3rd most popular horse trail of all 58 horseback rides in Colorado.
