North of Tampa and west of Orlando near Brooksville, the 145,000 acre Withlacooche State Forest has pine uplands, cypress swamps and river bottom woodlands. It is home to the 34 mile Croom Horse Trail network. These blue-blazed routes are on packed-sand roll through dense pine hills and oak hammock forests.
To reach the trailhead, follow US75 north to exit 301. Head east on SR50 for 1.0 miles and turn left on Croom Rital Road (CR480) for 5.3 miles. A small dirt parking area is available where the road crosses the Withlaccoche Rail-Trail (43 miles). There is another main horse parking area further down the road at the Tucker Hill Fire Tower.
Overall, Croom Horse Trail Network is the 1st most popular horse trail of all 34 horseback rides in Florida. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Croom Horse Trail Network including Alafia River State Park, Mustang Horse Trail, Arbuckle Tract, Walk-In-The-Water Loop and Tillis Hill Recreation Area.
