North of San Francisco near Mill Valley, the Muir Woods National Monument has trails winding through redwood groves and oak woodlands. The Deer Park Fire Road is open to horseback riding.

To reach the trailhead from the intersection of US 101 and SR 1 in Marin City, go west on SR 1 for 6 miles. Turn right on Muir Woods Road and go about 0.7 miles to the intersection with Heather Cutoff Trail. It is located at the intersection of Heather Cutoff and Muir Woods Road.

Overall, Deer Park Fire Road is the 5th most popular horse trail of all 81 horseback rides in California. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Deer Park Fire Road including Skyline Park and Annadel State Park.
