Southwest of Missoula in the Lolo National Forest, the 5,500 acre Blue Mountain Recreation Area has a vast network of trails open to horseback riding, including the 8 mile Blue Mountain National Recreation Trail. To reach the horseback riding trailhead from Missoula, follow US 93 (Reserve St.) south to Blue Mountain Road (CR30). Turn right heading northwest on Blue Mountain Road for 0.5 miles and park at the main area near the junction with FS365.

Overall, Blue Mountain National Recreation Trail is the 2nd most popular horse trail of all 16 horseback rides in Montana.
