South Boundary Trail Horseback Riding

East of Taos, the South Boundary Trail (#164) is an ideal backcountry horseback riding adventure running 22 miles through the old growth of the Sangre de Cristo range. The out & back route begins at El Nogal Picnic Area (7,300) on U.S. 64 approximately 5 miles east of Taos and steadily climbs to its intersection with FS437 in Garcia Park (note that many of the signs had been reported missing and the trail gets alittle sketchy near Garcia Park). The trail follows FS437 before veering southeast on FS438 after a short distance. It becomes trail again after two miles, heading east over to Osha Peak (10,770 ) and magnificent views of the Moreno Valley. The trail descends through paintbrush and ponderosa to its intersection with FS76 which in turn leads down to SR434 and the resort community of Angel Fire. The trail hovers at or above 10,000 feet upon reaching the Garcia Park Road until its descent into the Moreno Valley.
