Northwest of Walhalla and west of Mountain Rest, the Rocky Gap Horse Trail is a 12.5 mile horseback riding trail system consisting of several loops. The trail system connects with the 15 mile Willis Knob Loop. These are some of the most scenic trails in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains and wind across deeply dissected ridges along with descending to the Chattooga River.

To reach the trailhead from Walhalla, head north on SR28 for 6 miles. Turn left heading west on Whetstone Road for 5 miles. At the 4-way stop, continue for another 1.5 miles. Near where the payment ends, the trailhead parking will be on the right.

Overall, Rocky Gap Horse Trail is the 1st most popular horse trail of all 11 horseback rides in South Carolina. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Rocky Gap Horse Trail including Long Cane Horse Trail, Whetstone Horse Camp, Buncombe Horse Trail and Willis Knob Horse Trail.
