East of Clayton in the Chattahoochee National Forest, the Willis Knob Horse Trail is a 15 mile loop which connects with the 12.5 mile Rocky Gap Horse Trail system in South Carolina. These are some of the most scenic trails in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains and wind across deeply dissected ridges along with descending to the Chattooga River.

To reach the trailhead from Walhalla (SC), head north on SR28 for 6 miles. Turn left heading west on Whetstone Road for 5 miles. At the 4-way stop, continue for another 1.5 miles. Near where the payment ends, the trailhead parking will be on the right.

Overall, Willis Knob Horse Trail is the 1st most popular horse trail of all 13 horseback rides in Georgia. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Willis Knob Horse Trail including Fort Mountain State Park, Bull Mountain Trail, Turner Creek Trail and Sumac Creek Trail.
