East of Payson in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, the Woods Canyon Lake To Chevelon Canyon Lake route is a challenging 18 mile trek. It follows the creekbed/canyon bottom hike from Woods Canyon Lake dam to Chevelon Canyon Lake. Pines, firs, and many other beautiful plants grow adjacent to the creek. The dramatic Chevelon Canyon provides ruggedly spectacular scenery.
Starting at Woods Canyon Lake dam, the trail meanders along the creek until the canyon meets Willow Spring Canyon to form Chevelon Canyon. No trails exist on the majority of the hike which provides a challenge for even the seasoned backpacker.
To reach the horseback riding trailhead from the north take Forest Road 34 to Forest Road 300; turn left and drive 6 miles to Woods Canyon Lake entrance.
From the south, take State Highway 260 to Forest Road 300 and then proceed 3 miles on Forest Road 300 to Woods Canyon Lake entrance.
Overall, Woods Canyon Lake To Chevelon Lake is the 5th most popular horse trail of all 49 horseback rides in Arizona.
