East of San Diego and Alpine, the Boulder Oaks Equestrian Campground provides access to 20 miles of horseback riding trails.

To reach the trailhead from San Diego, head east on US 8 for about 43 miles and exit at Buckman Springs Road. The campground is about 2 miles off the highway.

Overall, Boulder Oaks is the 28th most popular horse trail of all 81 horseback rides in California. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Boulder Oaks including Daley Ranch, Noble Canyon Loop, Horsethief Trailhead, Big Laguna Trail, Pioneer Mail Trailhead and Penny Pine TrailheadCoyote Canyon.
