East of San Diego and southeast of Alpine, the Horsethief Trailhead provides access to 16 miles of horseback riding trails.

To reach the trailhead from Alpine, head southwest on Japatui Dehesa Road for 7 miles. At Japatul Valley Road, turn right heading south for 1 mile to the trailhead parking area.

Overall, Horsethief Trailhead is the 26th most popular horse trail of all 81 horseback rides in California.
