Near Monterey in the southern Bershires, the Beartown State Forest is the trailhead for over 25 miles of horseback riding trails.

To reach the forest from the Mass Turnpike (Rte. I-90): Take exit 2 to Rte. 102 west to SR7 south. Follow Rte. 7 to Rte. 23 east toward Monterey (Blue Hill Rd), then follow the brown signs.

Overall, Beartown State Forest is the 11th most popular horse trail of all 23 horseback rides in Massachusetts. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Beartown State Forest including Chester-Blandford State Forest and Monroe State Forest.
