West of Ipswich, the 2,400 acre Willowdale State Forest has 40 miles of trails open to mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding trails through forest. The main routes are blazed in red and blue - the combined red/blue route is a 7 mile loop. The trails wind through dense maple and oak forest.

To reach the southern trailhead from Boston, follow US1 north to Topsfield. Turn right heading east on Ipswich Road for 1.8 miles to roadside parking area at a trail crossing. Trails into the state forest are on the north side of the road. Trails into the Bradley Palmer State Park are on the south side of the road. There is an alternate northern parking area off Linebrook Road.

Overall, Willowdale State Forest is the 4th most popular horse trail of all 23 horseback rides in Massachusetts. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Willowdale State Forest including Myles Standish State Forest, Wompatuck State Park, Lynn Woods Reservation and F. Gilbert Hills State Forest.
