Southeast of Elko and northwest of Ruby Valley in the lushly forested 90,000 acres Ruby Mountain Wilderness, the 43 mile Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail runs the craggy range with lupines, bluebells, glacial lakes, bighorns and mountain goats. Note, water may be limited at times so check with the local ranger station.

A nice week long trip is up the Wines Peak (10,900) section.

A nice day trek is a 7 mile one-way stretch of the Ruby Crest Trail runs from Lamoille Canyon to North Furlong Lake through the heart of the ranges lakes, glacial valleys, and cirques. Starting in a meadow full of blue lupine, the trail quickly climbs through a series of staircased valleys. Lower Dollar and Lamoille Lakes, about two miles in, have excellent campsites, or continue on over 10,400-foot Liberty Pass; its another 5.5 miles to the turnaround point at North Furlong Lake, where there are primitive campsites.

An alternate day trek is the 14 mile Overland Lake Loop.

To reach the horseback riding trailhead from Elko, take SR 227 about 32 miles south to CR 660 (Lamoille Canyon Road) and drive 12 miles to the trailhead.

Overall, Ruby Crest Trail is the 1st most popular horse trail of all 24 horseback rides in Nevada.
