Southeast of Malone in the 12,000 acre Deer River State Forest, the Deer River Horse Trail consists of a series of interconnecting loop trails. The trails are well marked and traverse gently rolling forested hills.

To reach the trailhead from Malone, head southwest on SR11B for 12 miles to Conservation Road. Turn left on Conservation Road for 1.5 miles to the trailhead parking area.

Overall, Deer River Horse Trail is the 6th most popular horse trail of all 22 horseback rides in New York. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Deer River Horse Trail including Otter Creek Horse Trails and Grafton Lakes State Park.
