West of Ithaca and Watkins Glen in Schuyler County, the 9,000 acre Sugar Hill State Forest has 40 miles of trails shared by hikers, bikers and horseback riders. A portion of the Finger Lakes Trail also passes through the forest.

The best trailhead is on CR23 halfway between Watkins Glen and Tyrone near a rustic sign. If you can find it, theres also parking at the Sugar Hill Fire Tower.

Overall, Sugar Hill State Forest is the 5th most popular horse trail of all 22 horseback rides in New York. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Sugar Hill State Forest including Hammond Hill State Forest and Interloken Trail.
