West of Blacksburg in the Jefferson National Forest, the Trails of Dismal is a 20 mile horseback riding trail network through remote, challenging terrain near Falls Of Dismal.

To reach the horseback riding trailhead from Mechanicsburg, head east on SR42 for 2.6 miles. Turn left heading north on SR606 for 1 mile. Turn right heading northeast on SR201 to trailhead parking area.

Overall, Trails Of Dismal is the 10th most popular horse trail of all 35 horseback rides in Virginia. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Trails Of Dismal including Laurel Fork Trail, Tract Fork Trail, Crawfish/Channel Rock Loop, Balcony Falls Trail, Sulphur Spring Trail and Piney Ridge Trail.
