North of Vernal and southeast of Manila in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, the Red Canyon Rim Trail is a 9 mile round trip horseback riding route. This narrow and relentlessly rocky trail rolls through juniper, ponderosa, douglas and aspen forests. Near the rim, there are outstanding views of the deep blue Flaming Gorge about 1,700 feet below.
There are two options for trailhead parking: the Red Canyon Visitor Center or the Greendale Rest Area. The Greendale Rest Area is a better option since it accesses both the Red Canyon Rim Trail and the Swett Ranch Loop.
To reach the horseback riding trailhead from Vernal, head north on US191 for about 40 miles. At the US191 turnoff to the dam, continue straight on SR44 for about 0.5 miles to the Greendale Rest Area. The Canyon Rim Trail begins from the northwest side of the parking area near the restroom.
The trail rolls northwest towards the canyon rim through juniper and passes the turnoff for Skull Creek Campground. While this is an out-and-back route, there is a loop in the middle (ride clockwise).
Overall, Red Canyon Rim Trail is the 4th most popular horse trail of all 25 horseback rides in Utah.
