Southeast of Nevada City, the Grouse Ridge Trail is an 8 mile route open to horseback riding.

To reach the southern Eagle Lakes trailhead from US80, use the Eagle Lakes Exit. Proceed north past NFS Indian Springs Campground. Continue as far as the vehicle will go. A 4WD is required to reach the Eagle Lakes parking area.

From Eagle Lakes, the trail heads north to Sawmill Lake. Note: then northern end of the trail crosses the spillway dam at Sawmill Lake which may be impassible due to high water in Canyon Creek.

Overall, Grouse Ridge Trail is the 38th most popular horse trail of all 81 horseback rides in California. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Grouse Ridge Trail including Bullards Bar Loop Horse Trail, South Yuba River Trail, Mount Lola Trail and Pioneer Trail.
