Southeast of Pagosa Springs, the Elk Creek Trail is a 13.5 mile route heading northwest into the South San Juan Wilderness up to the Continental Divide.

The horseback riding trailhead is located off SR17 just west of FS250.

Overall, Elk Creek Trail is the 32nd most popular horse trail of all 66 horseback rides in Colorado. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Elk Creek Trail including Adams Fork Trail, Rainbow Hot Springs, Conejos River Trail, Valle Victorian Trail and Conejos Peak Trail.
