South of Duluth and southwest of Marksville in Pine County, the St Croix State Forest has 25 miles of trails shared by hikers and horseback riders. The trails can be accessed by either campground. The trail runs from Boulder Campgroun along the west bank of the Tamarack River, past the equestrian campground, crosses the river and then parallels the river in a southerly direction to Pine Point near the confluence of the Tamarack and the St. Croix Rivers.
Note, the horse trails along the Tamarack River bluff can be very dangerous for novice riders. Mallard Lake trails are easier.
Overall, St Croix State Forest is the 5th most popular horse trail of all 12 horseback rides in Minnesota. Several of the better horse trails are nearby St Croix State Forest including Big Aspen Horse Trail and McCarthy Beach State Park.
