South Mills River Trail Horseback Riding

In the Pisgah National Forest, the South Mills River area has 12 miles of horseback riding trails. There are numerous difficult river crossings.
The South Mills River Trail begins at the end of FS476, and terminates at the Turkey Pen Gap Trailhead.
To reach the trailhead from US276, head northeast on FS1206 (aka Yellow Gap Road) near Pink Beds Picnic Area. Continue northeast for 3.5 miles. Turn right heading south on FS476 (aka South Mills River Road) to near the end.
Overall, South Mills River Trail is the 9th most popular horse trail of all 18 horseback rides in North Carolina. Several of the better horse trails are nearby South Mills River Trail including Squirrel Gap Trail, Laurel Gap Trail and Harmons Den Area.
