Southwest of Asheville and northwest of Etowah, the Squirrel Gap area has 8 miles of horseback riding trails.

To reach the trailhead from US276, head northeast on FS1206 (aka Yellow Gap Road) near Pink Beds Picnic Area. Continue northeast for 3.5 miles. Turn right heading south on FS476 (aka South Mills River Road) to near the end.

Overall, Squirrel Gap Trail is the 12th most popular horse trail of all 18 horseback rides in North Carolina. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Squirrel Gap Trail including South Mills River Trail, Laurel Gap Trail and Harmons Den Area.
