In the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Balsam Mountain Trail is a 10 mile route open to horseback riding.

To reach the trailhead from the Oconaluftee Visitor Center head a little south to a left (east) on Big Cove Rd.(Straight Fork Rd.) Travel about 14 miles and look to the left for Roundbottom Horse Camp. Camp and head to the trail from here.

Overall, Balsam Mountain Trail is the 12th most popular horse trail of all 21 horseback rides in Tennessee. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Balsam Mountain Trail including Cooper Road Trail, Deep Creek Trail, Wolf Ridge Trail, Welch Ridge Trail, Foothills Parkway and Lakeshore Trail.
