Northwest of Walhalla and west of Mountain Rest, the Whetstone Horse Camp provides access to 28 miles of horseback riding trails. The Rocky Gap Horse Trail is a 12.5 mile trail system consisting of several loops. The trail system connects with the 15 mile Willis Knob Loop. These are some of the most scenic horse trails in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains and wind across deeply dissected ridges along with descending to the Chattooga River.
To reach the Whetstone Horse Camp trailhead from Walhalla, head north on SR28 for 6 miles. Turn left heading west on Whetstone Road for 5 miles. At the 4-way stop, continue for another 1.5 miles. Near where the payment ends, the trailhead parking will be on the right.
There are two alternate parking areas in the region: Woodall Ridge Day Use Parking and Earls Ford Parking.
Overall, Whetstone Horse Camp is the 3rd most popular horse trail of all 11 horseback rides in South Carolina. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Whetstone Horse Camp including Rocky Gap Horse Trail, Long Cane Horse Trail, Buncombe Horse Trail and Willis Knob Horse Trail.
