Northwest of Duluth and Virginia, the McCarthy Beach State Park has 9 miles of trails through deeply wooded forest. The trails follow rolling ridge lines on moraines between lakes and ponds.

To reach the horseback riding trailhead from Virigina, head west on US169 toward Hibbing. Just past Chisholm, turn north on CR5 for 15 miles to the park entrance.

Overall, McCarthy Beach State Park is the 7th most popular horse trail of all 12 horseback rides in Minnesota. Several of the better horse trails are nearby McCarthy Beach State Park including Big Aspen Horse Trail and St Croix State Forest.
