Old Military Trail Horseback Riding

North of Prescott, the Old Military Trail #1 is a 12.7 mile route open to horseback riding. The Old Military Trail (#1) extends from FS95 in the south at Walnut Creek Work Station to FS1 in the north at Happy Camp. Since it is a multi-use route, keep an eye our for mountain bikers and dirt bikers.
To reach the trailhead from Prescott, follow the Williamson Valley Road north from Prescott. Stay on this road (Forest Road 6) for 38 miles to the junction with Forest Road 95. Proceed west on Forest Road 95 for about 1.5 miles. The south trailhead lies at an elevation of 5,200 ft. and starts at Forest Road 95 just 0.2 miles east of the Walnut Creek Station. The Old Military Trail (#1) and the Juniper Springs Trail (#2) share the same trailhead. Follow Trail #2. About 1/3 mile north of the gate Trail #1 travels east. Follow the cairns and trail blazes.
Overall, Old Military Trail is the 42nd most popular horse trail of all 49 horseback rides in Arizona. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Old Military Trail including Granite Mountain / Granite Basin, Sycamore Trail, Groom Creek Loop, Sheridan Mountain / Smith Mesa, Thumb Butte and Seven Mile Gulch Trail.
