East of Crested Butte, the Teocalli Ridge Loop is a scenic and challenging route over 10 miles with plenty of climbing.
To reach the horseback riding trailhead for Teocalli Ridge from CB, follow SR135 south for 2 miles. Head northeast on Brush Creek Road (FS738) for 5 miles. Park near the intersection with West Brush Creek Road.
The horseback ride begins at 9000 feet with a long doubletrack climb up West Brush Road (FS738A). Stay to the right at the Deer Creek Trail turnoff and descend down to the West Brush Creek fjord. Continue climbing through the valley flanked by pine and aspen. The numerous beaver dams provide excellent habitat for the swarms of flys and misquitos.
Finally, after five miles, begin climbing onto Teocalli Mountain (13,200). As the doubletrack degenerates, the marked Teocalli Ridge Trail (#557) clearly heads southeast. Finally, the real climbing begins!
Once on the singletrack, ride up for another 2+ miles to 11,300 . (Don't be fooled by the many false tops). Descending at last, the trail becomes washed out and boulder strewn. Back down on Brush Creek Road, continuing on the road to fjord West Brush Creek back to the trailhead.
Overall, Teocalli Ridge Trail is the 60th most popular horse trail of all 66 horseback rides in Colorado. Several of the better horse trails are nearby Teocalli Ridge Trail including Horse Ranch Park, East / West Maroon Trail Loop, Oh Be Joyful and Rustler Gulch Trail.
