East of San Francisco and southwest of Tracy, the Carnegie State Recreation Area has 50 miles of trails over 1,500 acres open to OHV routes. Characterized by dry rocky washes, rolling hills and steep, rugged canyons, the park provides a setting for off-highway vehicle users of all skill levels.

To reach the OHV trailhead for Carnegie State Recreation Area from US580, use Exit 78. Head west on Corral Hollow Road (CR J2). Look for signed trailhead parking.

Over 3,000 acres located west of the current riding area, were purchased by the state for inclusion into Carnegie SVRA. This proposal, known as the Alameda-Tesla Expansion Project, will provide increased OHV recreational opportunities at Carnegie SVRA, including an extensive multiple use (i.e., motorcycles, ATVs, 4x4 vehicles, sports utility vehicles) trail system, a 4x4 vehicle obstacle course, a day-use staging area, and interpretive and informational facilities. The proposed project may also provide non-OHV recreational opportunities like mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking, provided there is no conflict between them and OHV users.

Note: 4WD truck use is limited to the valley floor.

Twenty-two campsites are available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Overall, Carnegie State Recreation Area is the 34th most popular OHV & 4wd jeep trail of all 102 OHV routes in California. Several of the better ohv/4wd trails are nearby Carnegie State Recreation Area including Stonyford OHV Area, Deer Creek OHV Staging Area, Knoxville Recreation OHV Area, Upper Ranch, Genoa Peak Road and Prairie City SVRANiagara OHV Area.
