South of Hartford near Farmington, the Winding Trails Cross Country Ski Center is one of the more popular areas in the state offering 20 km of trails groomed daily for classical and skate skiing. The double-tracked groomed trails are spread across 350 acres of woodlands.
Southeast of Hartford near Mansfield in Voluntown, the 23,000 acre Pachaug State Forest is the states largest and has plenty of XC ski trails. The Pachaug State Forest has two main areas; the Chapman Area and the Green Falls Area. The Chapman Area has the more popular nordic trails.
