South of Ironwood on the Upper Peninsula, the Active Backwoods Resort has 75km of groomed cross country ski trails for striders and skaters. Spread over 1,100 acres, the trails have many levels of difficulty and some run along the Montreal River. ABR is known for superior grooming and deep bases.
Near Ironwood, there are two cross country ski loops south of Big Powderhorn Mountain Ski Area. The Wolverine Loop is an easy to moderate 5 km loop, while the Powderhorn Loop is a moderate to difficult 7 km loop.
