Near Great Barrington, the Butternut Basin is considered the pride of the Berkshires with 12 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails. It is surrounded by rolling vistas and evergreen and hardwood forests.

Overall, Butternut Cross Country is the 3rd most popular cross country ski area of all 21 Nordic ski destinations in Massachusetts. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Butternut Cross Country including Bucksteep Manor, Hickory Hill XC, Mount Graylock State Reservation, Notchview Reservation, Beartown State Forest and Maple Corner FarmCanterbury Farm Ski Area.
