Northeast of Tahoe City, the Squaw Valley ski area has 16 miles of cross-country ski trails.

The lodging options at Squaw and nearby towns are very limited and very expensive.

Better known for the alpine skiing, this area is not known for its nightlife. For apres ski, try the Loft Bar, but the best bets are in Tahoe City (Pierce Street Annex, Pete & Peters, Naughty Dog) or Truckee (American Bar, Tahoe Taps or the Tourist Club).

Overall, Squaw Valley USA is the 24th most popular cross country ski area of all 38 Nordic ski destinations in California. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Squaw Valley USA including Royal Gorge XC, Kirkwood, Northstar XC and Telemark, Sugar Pine Point State Park, Cabin Creek Cross Country Ski Area and Blackwood Canyon Sno-ParkBear Valley XC.
