Southeast of Pittsburgh near Somerset, the 13,600 acre Laurel Ridge State Park area has 55 miles of trails for cross country skiing in the Laurel Highlands. Within the state park, there are 35 miles of ungroomed backcountry trails. Adjacent to the state park, a concessioner operates 20 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails (located on SR653 at Laurel Ridge.
Overall, Laurel Ridge State Park is the 2nd most popular cross country ski area of all 33 Nordic ski destinations in Pennsylvania. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Laurel Ridge State Park including Ohiopyle State Park, Laurel Highlands Ski Touring Area, Roaring Run Natural Area, Mountain Streams Trail System, North Woods Ski Touring Area and Forbes State Forest - North.
