East of Cable, the local favorite Rock Lake National Recreation Trail is a multi-loop cross country ski system totaling 20km winding through deep forest. It is a great winter retreat. The cross country ski trailhead for the Rock Lake Trail is located seven miles east of Cable on County Highway M.

Overall, Rock Lake Trail is the 19th most popular cross country ski area of all 37 Nordic ski destinations in Wisconsin. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Rock Lake Trail including American Birkebeiner Trail, Mukwonago Trail, Telemark Ski Area, Mount Ashwabay Ski Trails, Nicolet Nordic Ski Trail and Lakewood Cross-Country Ski TrailLauterman Trail.
