Near Mammoth Lakes in the eastern Sierras, the Rock Creek Lodge has 15km of groomed trails.
Location: Rock Creek Lodge is located on the eastern slope of the Sierra, halfway between Mammoth and Bishop on a paved secondary road 8 miles and 2,300 feet above highway 395. Turn west at the Toms Place turnoff and proceed 6 miles up the Rock Creek Lake road which is plowed to East Fork, a CA Snowpark area. This is where you will meet our snow mobile for the final two-mile ride up to the Lodge. Tire chains, a shovel, and antifreeze effective to -20F are absolutely essential in all vehicles.
The Cross Country Ski Trails are located in Rock Creek Canyon, 24 miles south of Mammoth Lakes, and 30 miles north of Bishop, Exit Toms Place and drive south 10.5 miles up the road to East Fork SnoPark. Purchase a 5 dollar SnoPark permit on site for the day, or buy a seasonal permit at Toms Place for 25 dollars. The groomed skiing starts there. The touring begins (1/20/01) at Rock Creek Lake 3 miles up from East Fork and is good into Little Lakes Valley.
Here are some specific Cross Country Ski Trail descriptions:
Rock Creek Rd.:Gradual uphill/downhill trail, with a few steep climbs/descents, incredible views, over 7 kilometers
The Outhouse Trail:Steeper, narrower trail, in the forest, lots of bumps and rolls, very fun, 3 kilometers
The East Fork Loops:Relatively flat terrain perfect for skating, over 1 kilometer
The Pond Loop: Mostly groomed when conditions permit, beautiful quiet loop along flat terrain, following Rock Creek, and in dense forests and open meadows, small step-across creek crossings may be encountered depending on snowpack, 1.5 kilometers
Skating Lanes:Flat loop in open meadow perfect for skating laps with incredible scenery surrounding you, less than 1 kilometer
Rock Creek Lake Loop:Turn off Rock Creek Rd., and cruise along the eastern edge of Rock Creek Lake on mostly flat terrain with the occaisional rise and drop, beautiful views of the lake and Bear Creek Spire, 1.5 kilometer
