Southeast of Hartford near Mansfield in Voluntown, the 23,000 acre Pachaug State Forest is the states largest and has plenty of XC ski trails. The Pachaug State Forest has two main areas; the Chapman Area and the Green Falls Area. The Chapman Area has the more popular trails.

To reach the cross-country skiing trailhead, follow US395 to Exit 85. Head east on SR138. In Vountown, turn left onto SR49 for 0.5 miles to the entrance. Park at the end of the paved road.

Overall, Pachaug State Forest is the 5th most popular cross country ski area of all 7 Nordic ski destinations in Connecticut. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Pachaug State Forest including Pine Mountain Trails and Winding Trails.
