Near Wilkes Barre, the 8,000 acre Lackawanna State Forest has 24 miles of cross country ski trails.
To reach the trailhead from Wilkes Barre, head south on SR 115. Left at a blinking light 5 miles south of Bear Creek exit of Turnpike. Turn right and proceed 2 miles to Pinchot trailhead.
Or, from US80, take Exit #43 and head north on SR115 for 5.7 miles, passing through Blakeslee. Then, turn right on State Route 2040/River Road for Thornhurst, 4.5 miles. Go 0.3 miles past Thornhurst, turn left on S.R. 2016/Bear Lake Road to reach the trailhead on the right in 4 miles. The trail may also be accessed via US380: Take exit 6, go north on Pennsylvania 435 and west on River Road (here S.R. 2013 to Bear Lake Road and turn right.
Overall, Lackawanna State Forest is the 9th most popular cross country ski area of all 35 Nordic ski destinations in Pennsylvania.
