Upper Lake McDonald Cross Country Skiing

The 20th most popular XC Ski in Montana.

In the Upper Lake McDonald area, there are several ungroommed cross country skiing options heading up McDonald Creek starting from Lake McDonald Lodge. First, there is the 4 mile round trip trek up unplowed roads to McDonald Falls. Second, there is the 5.3 mile round trip trek on the Sacred Dancind Cascades Loop. Finally, there is the 11.6 mile round trip trek heading up Going-To-The-Sun Road to the Avalanche Picnic Area. For an extended journey, try trekking up to Avalanche Lake through a steep, narrow canyon.

Overall, Upper Lake McDonald is the 20th most popular cross country ski area of all 37 Nordic ski destinations in Montana.
