In the Apgar area, there are several ungroomed cross country skiing options.
First, the Apgar Lookout route is a 10.5 round trip trek starting from the concession Horse Barn. It follows the left fork of an unplowed road across the Quarter Circle Bridge. Take the right fork and follow the road 0.5 miles until the actual Apgar Lookout trailhead is reached. Climbing skins may be necessary to reach the lookout. Return via the same route.
Second, the McGee Meadow Loop is a 11.5 mile trek northwest from Apgar at the McDonald Creek Bridge parking area. From the parking area, follow the right fork of the road up the shore of Lake McDonald towards Fish Creek Campground. Bear left past the campground on Inside North Fork Road. Watch for the orange marker for McGee Meadow trail. Ski the northern edge of the meadow to Camas Road and follow south back to the trailhead parking.
Overall, Apgar is the 29th most popular cross country ski area of all 37 Nordic ski destinations in Montana. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Apgar including Izaak Walton Inn, Round Meadows, Upper Lake McDonald, North Fork Flathead - Polebridge, Blacktail Mountain and Glacier NordicRendezvous Ski Trail System.
