Near Marquette in northwest Iowa, the 8,500 acre Yellow River State Forest has miles of cross-country trails in the Paint Creek Unit. The trail run through through oak-hickory forest rife with wild turkeys, deer, Coopers hawks and woodchucks.

To reach the cross-country skiing trailhead from Marquette, on the Mississippi, drive 12 miles north on SR 76, turn right on CR B25, and drive four miles to forest headquarters.

Overall, Paint Creek Unit Winter Trails is the 5th most popular cross country ski area of all 15 Nordic ski destinations in Iowa.
