Southwest of Gunnison, the popular Hartmans Rocks Recreation Area occasionally has cross-country ski trails open depending upon the winter snow conditions. There are many winters where there is insufficient snow to open these trails to winter usage. But, when it is good, it is a very scenic location for nordic skiing.

To reach the cross-country skiing trailhead from Gunnison, head west on US50 to Gold Basin Road (BLM 3062). Turn left heading south on Gold Basin Road for 3 miles to the signed parking area on the right.

Overall, Hartman Rocks Recreation Area is the 37th most popular cross country ski area of all 58 Nordic ski destinations in Colorado. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Hartman Rocks Recreation Area including Pitkin, Mill Creek Nordic Ski Trails, Creek and Waunita.
