East of Gunnision near Ohio City, the Quartz Creek System consists of three cross country ski trails. The Pitkin Ski Trails (21.5 miles) are ungroomed trails and roads east of Pitkin. The trailhead is located 0.5 miles east of Pitkin at the NFS Pitkin Campground. There are loop routes through lodgepole pine forests in the glacial valleys of the Quartz Creek drainage. Avoid Alpine Tunnel Road due to high avalanche danger.

To reach Pitkin from Gunnison, head east on US50 to Parlin. Turn left heading north on CR76 through Ohio City and onto Pitkin.

Overall, Pitkin is the 40th most popular cross country ski area of all 58 Nordic ski destinations in Colorado. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Pitkin including Hartman Rocks Recreation Area, Creek, Waunita and Mill Creek Nordic Ski Trails.
