North of Bedford near Claysburg, the 5,600 acre Blue Knob State Park has several ungroomed cross country ski trails. For beginners, try the Chappels Fields Trails. Advanced skiers should try the Rock N Ridge Trail or the Lost Turkey Trail. The 26 mile Lost Turkey Trail used for backcountry skiing and leads into adjacent Game Land #28. It begins at the Blue Knob Fire Tower and ends at the Babcock State Forest Ranger Station on SR56. It follows an old railgrade.

To reach the state park from the PA Turnpike, use Exit 11 in Bedford. Go north on I-99 to Route 869 west (at Osterburg). Follow Route 869 to Pavia, then follow signs through Pavia to park.

Overall, Blue Knob State Park is the 6th most popular cross country ski area of all 35 Nordic ski destinations in Pennsylvania.
