North of Sault Ste Marie, the 3,000 acre Hiawatha Highlands wilderness preserve has 11 trails totaling 42km groomed for classical and skate skiing. The trails wind through hardwood highlands and cedar lowlands.

To reach the cross-country skiing trailhead from Sault Ste Marie, head north on Highway 17 for 9km. Turn east on 5th Line for 2km.

Overall, Hiawatha Highlands is the 32nd most popular cross country ski area of all 49 Nordic ski destinations in Ontario. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Hiawatha Highlands including Searchmont, Stokely Creek Ski Touring, Wabos Wilderness, Windy Lake Trail System and Windy Lake.
