East of Edmonton near Fort Saskatchewan, the Elk Island National Park has 100km of backcountry ski trails. It is located 50km east of Edmonton.

Overall, Elk Island National Park is the 31st most popular cross country ski area of all 37 Nordic ski destinations in Alberta. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Elk Island National Park including Cooking Lake Blackfoot Provincial Park, Miqueion Lake Provincial Park, Vermillion Provincial Park and River Valley Outdoor Centre.
