Near Monterey in the southern Berkshires, the Beartown State Forest is the trailhead for over 25 miles of cross country skiing trails.

To reach the forest from the Mass Turnpike (Rte. I-90): Take exit 2 to Rte. 102 west to Rte. 7 south. Follow Rte. 7 to Rte. 23 east toward Monterey (Blue Hill Rd), then follow the brown signs.

Overall, Beartown State Forest is the 14th most popular cross country ski area of all 21 Nordic ski destinations in Massachusetts. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Beartown State Forest including Bucksteep Manor, Maple Corner Farm, Hickory Hill XC, Notchview Reservation, Butternut Cross Country, Mount Graylock State Reservation, Canterbury Farm Ski Area and .
