North of NYC near Bear Mountain, the 5,000 acre Bear Mountain State Park is in the rugged mountains rising from the west bank of the Hudson River. The best cross country skiing in the park is the 4 mile loop to the top of Bear Mountain (1,300) along an original stretch of the Appalachian Trail.

The Bear Mountain State Park is located about 45 miles north of NYC off the Palisades Parkway or US87.

Overall, Bear Mountain Loop Trail is the 5th most popular cross country ski area of all 61 Nordic ski destinations in New York. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Bear Mountain Loop Trail including Rampo-Dunderberg Trail, Mohonk Mountain House, Clarence Fahnesock State Park and Fahnestock Winter Park.
