South of Taos and northwest of Holman, the Agua Piedra Campground is a great base for exploring 13 miles of cross country skiing trails ranging from 8,400 feet to 11,400. The Agua Piedra Trail (#19A) heads south from the campground near the corral. It will take you to the junction of Trail 22, about one mile from the trailhead (8,400 feet). The old logging road continues up a drainage for another four miles then narrows as it switchbacks another mile to the Jicarita Ridge. The junction with Skyline Trail 36 is at the top of the ridge. Trail 22 heads northwest into Comales Canyon, Trail 22 climbs to Ripley Point (11,400 feet).

To reach the Agua Piedra Campground from Taos, head south on SR68 to SR75. Turn left heading east on SR75 for about 22 miles. The campground is on the right. There are two trailheads from at this campground. Use the second trailhead further up the road near the corral.

Overall, Agua Piedra Trail is the 11th most popular cross country ski area of all 12 Nordic ski destinations in New Mexico. Several of the better cross country ski trails are nearby Agua Piedra Trail including Angel Fire Resort, Ski Rio, Alamitos Trail, Maquinita Canyon Trail and Cordova Trail.
